Current Curriculum

2013/2014

I have a 7th and 3rd grader this year (roughly, it’s never that clear cut with the youngest). To change things up and begin getting in some college prep, we are taking advantage of an ALE program (Alternative Learning Environment) aimed at homeschoolers in our area. The boys go to a homeschool campus twice weekly to take some classes. Brandon is planning to start college in three years, so this gives us access to preparation for the Running Start program, another program in our state that aids with early college admissions and mitigates the cost.

Our Curriculum:

Aioden–

Language arts:

K12 3rd grade spelling lists (Free)

KISS grammar level 1 (Free)

Daily reading

Writing class through ALE program

Math:

Kahn Academy (Free)

Xtra Math (Free)

A variety of math board games I’ve made or purchased over the years.

(Note: We began the year using CSMP math, a free curriculum, but Aioden is gifted and quickly mastered then became bored with the entire year’s curriculum. So far, Kahn combined with me working as an active coach and supplementing the video lessons/problem sets with hands-on teaching and activities has been slaking his thirst for harder math.)

History:

Story of the World Vol. 3

Timeline book (Using these free images)

Mapwork (Free maps for printing)

Science:

Mr. Q’s Chemistry (Offers the complete Biology curriculum free, but I love this curriculum and find it well worth the cost for the other volumes!)

Physics and engineering (Through the ALE program)

Languages:

Getting Started With Latin (Book costs money, but lots of free resources plus an upper level Latin course on his website.)

Art:

The Children’s Art Book

Brandon–

Language Arts:

Currently through the ALE program, but we aren’t happy with it and will be switching to the below at semester break:

KISS Grammar level 3 (Free)

Online journal/blog (Free) — I’ll post more on how we are turning a blog into a full writing program in January!

Free Rice vocabulary practice (Free)

Math:

Online/Onsite prealgebra through the ALE program

History:

Same as Aioden, except he is also practising notetaking and outlining along with his reading, using our DK history encyclopedia to dig deeper.

Science:

Mr. Q’s Chemistry

Languages:

Getting Started With Latin

Chinese (Through ALE program)

Art:

Music (Through ALE program)

Note: Some of the book links above go to my Amazon affiliate store.

Our Schedule

We use a block schedule, so times are estimates only. On Tuesday and Thursday the boys are at their ALE program, so we don’t do much at-home work except for Aioden, who does put in 20 minutes of math and 20 minutes of reading aloud.
